My name is Teresa. I was first introduced to meth in ’95. At first, it was a once in a while thing to do and then before I realized it became everyday. It consumed my whole life and it was like I wasn’t even aware of all that I lost. I went through a divorce, my child was living with her grandparents and I was arrested in the state of Georgia for possession. I was so far in denial that I wouldn’t admit I had a problem. I pushed my family away because I thought they were the problem, not me. In May of 2004, the walls came crashing down and I was once again in jail, this time in Alabama. This was my bottom. I felt as though I had failed my whole life, especially as a mother. I realized I needed help and that I could not change on my own. I finally admitted to my mom that I was an addict and asked for help.
While I was in jail, I began to pray to God to please give me a chance. I didn’t want to live that way anymore. At this point, my healing began. On July 15th, 2004 after 67 days in jail, my prayer was answered and I was able to go into treatment at New Life for Women. This is where God really started working and transforming my life. They taught me that I wasn’t a failure and that I did deserve to have a good life. They showed me how to believe in myself. My relationship with God got stronger and today I have a wonderful relationship with my family. I am finally a mom to my 9 year-old daughter! I completed 6 weeks of in-house treatment and 6 months of outpatient. I have completed 1 year of drug screenings without any positives – PRAISE GOD!! I have been clean for 17 months and am now working at New Life for Women, getting to help others who are just like me. Through surrendering my life and will over to God, I truly have a NEW LIFE today!
My name is Ashley. I have struggled with drug addiction for over 10 years but by the grace of God, I was delivered from that sickness in January of this year.
I was raised in a Christian home with loving parents who made sure I was in church each week. I went to a private Christian school and was pretty happy and content with my life. I attended Birmingham Southern College and was majoring in music when I realized I was pregnant. The guy I was dating thought we should get married so that is what I did. My family was ashamed and embarrassed and for the first time, I felt isolated from everyone that I truly loved. After my daughter was born, I had severe post-partum depression, which led to my nervous breakdown at 20 years old. Instead of getting back into church and trying to restore the broken relationship with my family, I turned to drugs. It started with pot and for the next 10 years, my life went from bad to worse. I was divorced at age 23 and my life became unmanageable. I tried every drug out there but when I was 25, I was introduced to meth. I loved it! I quickly became addicted and lost my job, my friends and custody of my child. I knew I had to do something in order to have money to support my habit so I started dealing. This quickly became a profitable business for me and meth now consumed everything I did in my life. I made a lot of money, bringing in 10 to 20 thousand dollars a week. I thought I had it all figured out but my life was like a horror film. I prayed and begged God to kill me in my sleep. I tried to commit suicide on more than one occasion but God had a different plan for me. I was finally arrested on distribution and held without bond. I told my parents I needed to go to rehab and they called New Life for Women.
My life changed. I spent five months there and it was the most rewarding time of my life. I rededicated my life to Christ and really got into the Bible. Through my counseling sessions, I learned the necessary coping skills I needed to stay sober once I left, and they have proven to be invaluable lessons in my daily life. I have an amazing support group of friends that I love so much. I have made amends to my family and restored my relationships with them. I get to see my daughter on a regular basis and have more joy and peace that I ever imagined. I am so thankful for the New Life for Women program and CrossPoint Community Church for helping to turn my life around!
